In short

An interest calculator from Rosepine Lenders in Sierra Vista, Arizona for working capital loans, with worked examples on loan length, a line-of-credit draw and what an estimate leaves out.

Working Capital Loan Interest: The Rate You Enter Comes From Your Offer

The calculator needs three inputs: the amount, the annual interest rate and the number of months. The rate should come from a real offer or a quote you are considering, not from a guess, because the rate drives the result and only a partner can set it.

If an offer states its cost another way, such as a total payback amount, a fee or a factor, convert it before using the calculator. A merchant cash advance, for example, has no interest rate; its cost is the purchased amount minus the advance, and it is not a loan.

Illustration only, invented figures: $40,000 at an invented annual rate of 13% over 12 months gives a payment of about $3,572.69 a month and total interest of about $2,872 (our arithmetic).

Working Capital Term Loan Calculator: Months, Payment and Total Interest

Length changes two numbers in opposite directions. Stretching a loan lowers each payment and raises the total interest, because the balance is outstanding for longer.

One invented working capital loan run over two lengths (our arithmetic, illustration only)
Amount and invented annual rateMonthsMonthly paymentTotal interest
$40,000 at 13%12$3,572.69$2,872
$40,000 at 13%18$2,457.90$4,242

The 18-month version costs about $1,370 more in interest and lowers the payment by about $1,114.79 a month (our arithmetic). Which is better depends on when the receipts that close the gap are expected. A working capital loan should be paid off about when the gap closes.

Working Capital or a Line of Credit: Running Both Scenarios

A line of credit charges interest only on what is drawn, for as long as it is drawn. Illustration only, invented figures: drawing the same $40,000 on a line at an invented annual rate of 13% for 45 days, then repaying it in full, costs about $641 in interest (our arithmetic, simple daily interest).

The comparison shows why the two products suit different gaps. If the money comes back in weeks, a draw that is repaid quickly carries little interest. If the gap lasts the better part of a year, the line and the loan come out closer, and the loan's fixed schedule is known from the start.

Use the calculator for the loan and simple daily interest for the line, with rates and fees from real offers. Business lines of credit explains draws and renewal.

What the Interest Estimate Leaves Out

  • Origination, documentation or draw fees, which reduce the money received or add to the cost.
  • A variable rate, which can move the payment.
  • Prepayment terms: whether paying early saves interest or carries a fee.
  • Any required insurance or collateral costs.
  • For lines, fees on the unused limit and renewal fees.

Compare offers on the total of every payment and fee minus the amount received. A working capital loan offer should state each of these.

Run the calculator twice for any offer worth taking seriously: once with the term offered and once with the shortest term the business could carry. The gap between the two total-interest figures shows what the lower payment costs. If the shorter term would leave too little in the account during a slow month, the longer one may be worth its extra interest; if not, the shorter one keeps more of the money in the business.

Keep the printout or a screenshot with the offer. When the final documents from the partner arrive, check that the payment, the number of payments and the amount received match what the calculator showed for the same inputs, and ask about any difference before signing.
